What is reproductive trafficking?
Reproductive trafficking refers to the exploitation of individuals, typically women, for their reproductive capabilities. It involves the transport, recruitment, or harboring of pregnant people with the intent to place their child for adoption or engage them in surrogacy arrangements, often without their full informed consent.
Reproductive trafficking can occur domestically or internationally and is not currently defined under federal law. Reproductive trafficking does not fall under federal definitions of labor trafficking or sex trafficking. It is an issue that often occupies a legal gray area, though accompanying law violations may occur.
